Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We welcome you to The Fresco International Workshop on Synaptic Plasticity and Clinical Advances in Parkinson’s Disease. This is a combination of the fifth “International Workshop on Synaptic Plasticity: from bench to bedside”, previously organized in Sicily and more recently in Lucca, and a novel part on updates in the care of Parkison’s disease and related disorders. The success of the first four Workshops on Synaptic Plasticity and new emerging themes in this complex field were strong arguments in favor of organizing a fifth edition of the conference.

In the first two-and-a-half day workshop, experts from various fields will provide an overview of the scientific advances on different aspects of brain plasticity from bench to bedside. In particular, the five sessions will explore a number of issues: from the perception of beauty to a possible role of art and music in rehabilitation of neurodegenerative diseases; the relation between genetics, epigenetics, and plasticity, as well as the relation between immunity, inflammation process, and plasticity; novel measures of functional and structural connectivity; and finally, the role of plasticity in the genesis and treatment of psychiatric symptoms. The novelty of this symposium is the addition of a comprehensive review of the advances in diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders in the closing day. NYU Langone faculty from the Fresco Institute and the leaders in the Fresco Parkinson Network in Europe will present a series of didactic lectures on these topics. In summary, participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of plasticity and its relevance to the genesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

This fifth edition is generously sponsored by the Fresco Parkinson Institute Italia and the Fondazione CR di Firenze.

We hope you will enjoy the science but also the social program that includes events at Palazzo Strozzi and at the Istituto degli Innocenti.
